Description

Woo-hoo! The tiniest of milestones is in the house. I mean, it's nothing big really, but it keeps my mood good and spirits high. Since I started the whole Daily Abomination project I already managed to skip a day or two, but ultimately, I strived day after day to deliver a fresh, quick digital painting of some random monster. Obviously Lovecraftian mythos and the such were a big inspiration, but Magic: The Gathering is there too, offering some fantastic ideas wrapped in perfect execution of ideas. Before Eldrazi, there were Phyrexians in my "great ideas of design" book.

Phyrexians, the unholy mix of flesh and metal, living machines and horrors made from the twisted will of self-proclaimed God - Yawgmoth, Father of Machines. I loved their design, I loved how flexible they were with them. Some were obvious mixed of machines and beasts. Others were unearthly demons, flesh remade to fit a new role in Yawgmoth's plans. Others were crafted creatures of dark beauty. Despite their seemingly lack of unification in design, they always bear an icon of Phyrexia or the Yawgmoth Mask of ownership and allegiance. And so, this here beastie is made, a devout and silent telepath that chant constant prayers to its overlord and one true master, channeling pure black mana to fuel the mad god might even further...

A very good interpretation. I see the true horror of Phyrexia on their White cards; the ones that speak the most about the religious doctrines of metal and flesh. Maybe it's because I'm a christian myself, but the subtle (and not-so-subtle) terrors of Phyrexian thought I see manifested the best in cards like Phyrexian Unlife. Plus, Elesh norn itself has a grand design: both horrifying and magnificent.
